Under the Influence of Giants

Take a listen to them at or
Latest Album: Under the Influence of Giants Label: Island Def Jam

From the Producers over at Island Def Jam comes another wacky indie band. Sometimes know as just The Giants this band creates a mix of a classic beatles sound with a more mordern pop sound. Yet still this can not fully describe their type of music. To truely understand their style you must listen at least 3 of their songs… then maybe, just maybe, you can get a jist of their musical standing. The Giants hit the major label scene recently, scoring “big” deals with MTV and other networks for promotion of their latest hit, Mama’s Room. If you havn’t gotten a chance to check out their music video, keep an eye out (all the youtube, etc.. versions of it have been taken down). Just the name of the song alone reminds me of Stacy’s Mom.

This band has something different that makes them stand out, and that is exactly why a label like Island Def Jam would sign them so quickly. Like William Hung and the other’s before him, the Major labels will squeeze all the $$ out of them until theres no more, leaving them and their music in the dust. Nonetheless, whatever their reign may be, this band currently captivates us with a video of psychadelic lights and almost too sweet sounding music for us to enjoy.

The Classic Crime

Take a listen to them at or
Latest Album: Albatross Label: Tooth & Nail

With their hit song The Coldest Heart, The Classic Crime has jumped into the music scene with catchy rhythms and purely rock songs. Included in this mashup of music, is a sweet, yet suttle, rock organ barely noticeable to the regular listener it adds a different perspective to their songs. This band has a message to get out to the world. This message represents an era of music held by a new generation of artists and listeners. With sweet harmony and rock solid guitar, this band creates a name for it’s self among many of the top up and coming bands.

I really suggest you take a listen to their music and keep an eye on this band. Like many of the other Tooth & Nail bands, they write just plain good music.

Take a listen to them at or
Latest Album: Smile, It’s the End of the World Label: Tooth & Nail

Some argue that this band is too Punk to make it big, but with a strong alternative influence, Hawk Nelson does a good job writing songs that actually mean something. Their new cd was just released and you can take a listen to all their songs on purevolume. If you enjoy Blink 182, but get sick of the same thing over and over, then you should take a listen to Hawk Nelson. They have a variety of different styles of songs, from Is forever enough, a harder rock song, to Everything you ever wanted, a softer more meaningful song. A few other songs of their that stand out to me include The one thing i have left and Things we go through. The members of this band call Canada home and just a few years ago were living the low life while working at coffee shops and toll booths. Now with over 100,000 sales of their first album, Letters to the President, Hawk Nelson has gained industry attention. As many of the bands signed under Tooth & Nail, Hawk Nelson keep their roots with their listeners and live up the music.

Automatic Black

Latest Album: De Evolution
Label: Indie

To start my first post on ModRoc, I thought I’d choose a band who calls philadelphia home. In the years since 2001, Automatic Black has come to be known for a nice rock sound with listeners from the Alternative, Rock, and Metal crowd. Their latest single, Crash and Burn, was just posted on their myspace recently and with 44,000+ spins (many more then any of their other songs) it seems to be a hit. With a heavy guatar griven beat, their songs appeal to many listening styles
